The basic idea for the mighty and merciless BugBear came about fairly quickly: I knew I wanted him to have a combination of insect exoskeleton and ursine fur, have giant mantis claws for front limbs, and walk upright ala King Kong or Godzilla; so the mental picture I had of him was pretty clear from the get-go. Well, almost - the very first (very rough) scribble I did of him gave him a set of four mantis legs, but having his bulky, powerful body perched atop those long, spindly limbs made him look awkward and unbalanced; to say nothing of the fact that said legs could not possibly support all that weight. So, with the above sketch, I reached a much more practical solution: kind of bear-like, kind of dinosaur-like walking legs with 'toes' that are actually repurposed praying mantis legs, to continue the insect theme all the way through BugBear's design. And, of course, I also incorporated the body-horror-style transformation of Dr. Wiley Noah into the sketch to provide a bit of visceral context....
