You may wonder why I never inked in or coloured 'Caveman no. 3' after I created it those many years ago; and the answer is two-fold. For very practical reasons, I had to put it well down my list of priorities the year I did it, what with assignments and Cosmos comics and other Fight Squad stuff; and it has remained as is ever since. For more sentimental and aesthetic reasons, however, I had a feeling that I SHOULDN'T ink it: even in just pencil art, the strip feels complete in and of itself, with readable dialogue and nice, clean art where you can very clearly see what's going on. Not only that, I think I've captured the characters moods and expressions (especially on this spread) perfectly already, and trying to 'finalise it' in pen art might actually compromise or destroy the quirky spontaneity of the original sketches. There's a wonderful 'opposites attract' feel to the characters, with Steve's cynical grumbling balanced nicely by Greta's perky optimism; another reason why I love this story so much....
